Until recently, the sustainability action plans of most firms have focused on energy and carbon but not on the materials specified. The AIA Materials Pledge is challenging the industry to recognize the critical importance of materials in our work by defining five health impact categories that shift us toward holistically responsible material selection. This session will profile the work of firms at every scale who have successfully integrated materials into their sustainability action plan. Approaches differ based on firm personality and structure—from defining design-phase deliverables to goals by Materials Pledge impact category over time.
