Maria has 20 years of experience in architecture, science, and education and is EwingCole’s Director of Sustainable Design. She is a registered architect with degrees in environmental chemistry and biology, and a passion for sustainable design grew from her mutual interest in the built and natural environments. Maria leads EwingCole’s multi-disciplinary team of sustainability experts, Thrive@EC, and she partners with leaders firmwide on sustainability commitments and initiatives. Maria collaborates with project teams to understand priorities and help translate them into the sustainability value foundation for each project. Her efforts focus on optimization of material selection for human health and environmental conservation and on performance improvement across all project types.
Maria’s professional portfolio includes science & technology, healthcare, university, and corporate workplace project design. She is currently serving as Co-Chair of the national AIA Materials Pledge Working Group, is an active participant in the AIA Large Firm Roundtable (LFRT) and the Sustainable Design Leaders (SDL) network, and previously taught design studios as an adjunct Professor of Practice in the School of Architecture at NC State University. Maria has presented on the value of building and material reuse at recent conferences, including I2SL and Tradeline, and virtually for Material Bank Design Your Impact. She is the 2020 recipient of the Gail Lindsey Award from AIA Triangle for her contributions to the culture of sustainable design within the Triangle.
