Jonathan Segal, FAIA, has redefined the traditional role of the architect by eliminating the client and serving as his own developer and builder. Since 1988, he has designed, developed, and constructed nationally and internationally award-winning single-family, multifamily, live/work, and mixed-use housing in downtown San Diego and La Jolla.
Deeply committed to urban San Diego, Jonathan is known for opposing insensitive development while preserving and thoughtfully integrating historic architecture. His work has earned more than 100 national, state, and local design awards. He has received seven National AIA Housing Awards and six AIA California Honor Awards for Urban Housing—more than any other architect in San Diego. In 2003, he was inducted into the AIA College of Fellows (FAIA), the youngest architect in San Diego to receive this distinction. Residential Architect Magazine named him a National Rising Star (2004), one of the top 50 architects in the nation (2011), and awarded him multiple honors, including Project of the Year in 2012. In 2019, he became the only architect in AIA California history to win two Honor Awards in the same year.
In 2021, the City of San Diego designated Jonathan a MASTER ARCHITECT—one of only 61 ever recognized and the only surviving member. That same year, the Mr. Robinson building was designated a Historic Resource, becoming the youngest building in California to receive the honor. Three of his other projects are also historically designated. He is a recipient of the AIA California Distinguished Practice Award and the prestigious Maybeck Award.
A frequent lecturer on the “Architect as Developer” model, Jonathan has spoken nationwide and co-founded the Woodbury University Master of Real Estate Development program. Beyond architecture, he is an award-winning collector of mid-century Italian sports cars, earning honors at Pebble Beach, Villa d’Este, and Hampton Court.
