Bill Gallagher, FAIA

Principal

KGP Design Studio, LLC

As one of the founding principals of KGP Design Studio, Bill Gallagher leads the firm’s transit, urban design and planning studio. He has over 40 years experience designing and managing projects from EIS studies through construction including architecture, urban design, TOD development and master planning for multiple transportation modes. As chief facilities designer for several transit systems he has worked with many international corporations in the US, Asia and the Middle East.

Since 2000, Bill has been the principal architectural, planning and urban design consultant for Washington’s Metrorail and regional rail system.
He was designer for all of Metrorail’s Dulles extension stations; lead architect for MTA Maryland’s Purple Line stations; and head urban designer for the Baltimore Red Line. In addition to winning the urban design competition for Pennsylvania Avenue west of the White House, he and his firm have designed pedestrian and vehicular bridges, bicycle trails and the iconic Bicycle Transit Center at Union Station. Currently he’s the architect for Amtrak’s Washington Union Station Concourse. Bill has been responsible for designing over 300 transit stations during his career.

Bill’s transit system experience began when he worked with Harry Weese, FAIA to design Washington’s Metrorail. He gained mastery of issues inherent in transit projects and the ability to collaborate with large, diverse construction teams. His acquired skills and knowledge put him on an equal footing with engineers and clients, enabling him to educate construction teams on the importance of architecture and its impact on transit systems and surrounding communities. Applying his expertise, he explains and demonstrates clear principles of transit design. By stressing the importance of these principles and the need to integrate good architecture in system design, Bill’s efforts have resulted in safer, better functioning, more aesthetically pleasing and ultimately more cost-effective transit stations.
