In 2019, the La Jolla Music Society opened the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in the Village of La Jolla. The building is the heart of community event activity with its four performance spaces, including the 500-seat Baker-Baum Concert Hall and the 140-seat JAI. The Society and local arts organizations host world-class performances year-round.
Join members of the design team to learn about the building and the story of its development with the community in response to the region's unique culture and climate.
Learning Objectives
- Discuss the integration of the form and spirit of local architectural gems into a contemporary composition of structures scaled to respond to the Village, providing a sensual connection to place.
- Explore the collaboration that created a world-class performance venue, fully integrating architecture, acoustics, and theater planning with Society and community needs.
- Discover how simple design strategies from diverse project participants allow the spaces to serve multiple functions in addition to the primary programmed intent.
- Assess how the design resolved technical challenges, including stringent building height restrictions and complex acoustic requirements, to achieve both contextual sensitivity and exceptional performance quality.
