Harvard University's Science and Engineering Complex (SEC) is one of the world's healthiest and most energy-efficient laboratory buildings. Certified by the International Living Future Institute (Living Building Challenge, or LBC) and the U.S. Green Building Council (LEED Platinum), the SEC exemplifies Harvard's commitment to a sustainable campus, community, and planet.

Join Behnisch Architekten for a tour of this 2023 AIA COTE Top Ten award–winning project to explore its use of healthy materials, passive design, energy performance, water reuse, and resilience strategies.

Learning Objectives

  1. Learn how to use an integrated design process to identify key factors influencing human comfort.
  2. Discover the significance, challenges, and opportunities in achieving LBC Healthy Materials Petal certification and the impact thereof on the marketplace to prompt change and transparency in healthy materials.
  3. Analyze water usage in laboratory facilities, and consider strategies to reduce consumption, including opportunities for reusing water and capturing stormwater and wastewater.
  4. Explore how the SEC was designed with user comfort in mind by incorporating natural ventilation, maximizing daylight access in all regularly occupied spaces, utilizing radiant heating and cooling systems, and other strategies.
