If you're an aspiring architect on the path to licensure, this session is a great opportunity to expand your understanding of building systems. You'll learn through fun, interactive demonstrations focusing on concepts like compression-refrigeration loop (air conditioning), power distribution, electrical circuits, building enclosures, ventilation, and air-handling units.

This session will also include a walking tour exploring the mechanical rooms of the National Building Museum and the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Along the way, you'll discover how architects utilize collaboration, sustainability, and balance to push the boundaries of the built environment.

Learning Objectives

  1. Get a close look at the HVAC systems, building circuits, transformers, breakers, and switches used in buildings today.
  2. Build upon your knowledge of individual systems to design buildings that are thermally comfortable, quieter, and use less energy.
  3. Deepen your understanding of building enclosures and the roles of each layer in the entire system so you can ask consultants the right questions and explain the importance of envelope components to clients.
  4. Develop a foundational understanding of building system concepts that appear on multiple ARE exams.
