Michelle Laboy, AIA Assoc., PE, LEED BD+C is principal of FieLDworkshop, a design firm in Boston, and an Associate Professor of Architecture at Northeastern University. She is a practicing designer, educator, researcher, and writer. Her education in engineering, architecture and urban planning informs an integrated approach to architecture that has agency in resilient and sustainable urban landscapes. Her design work operates at the intersection of culture and ecology, and includes landscape installations, exhibitions, master plans, renovations of cultural institutions, and sustainable design of housing and learning environments. Her practice-focused research was twice awarded the Latrobe Prize by the AIA College of Fellows, the first in 2017 resulting on the book “The Architecture of Persistence: Designing for Future Use” and the second in 2022, for community-based design research in the project CommonSENSES. She is also the recipient of research grants from NSF, DOE, and DHS, which are finding new paths for decarbonization and resilience in design of the built environment. Her research has been published in numerous journals, books, and conference proceedings. She teaches upper level courses in architecture design and building technology.
