As Chief Architect and Deputy Administrator for Capital Projects at the National Gallery of Art, Susan Wertheim shapes and revitalizes the Gallery’s campus and takes a curatorial approach to the National Gallery’s iconic buildings – the West Building designed by John Russell Pope and the East Building by I. M. Pei & Partners. Under her careful direction and guidance, the National Gallery's Office of Architecture and Engineering has completed a series of major capital renewal projects including a recent renovation and of the gallery spaces in the East Building. Ms. Wertheim began her architectural career in Boston, which led her to Washington, DC, where she changed career paths to be on the client side, initially at the Smithsonian Institution and then at the National Gallery. She holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University and a Master's degree from M.I.T.
