Arcadis

Rod Henderer FAIA, a Principal with Arcadis, has devoted his 30-year career to designing civic and public buildings, many of which are among this country’s most visible pieces of architecture, one of which may be considered the ultimate physical expression of our democratic government. At a time when public buildings must respond to a growing security threat, his projects advance civic architecture and refine the nature of public spaces by embodying the democratic ideal of assembly and civic pride. Rod’s unique and highly specialized body of work has had a broad impact on the American public notion of public architecture and the world’s view of this country’s democratic ideals and influence on the profession. In the 15 years since its opening, the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center has welcomed millions of visitors.
Rod’s other significant projects include the FDA’s new campus in Silver Spring, MD, with a population of 10,000; it is the physical backbone of an important regulatory process that directly impacts the health and well-being of the U.S. Next is NGA’s new headquarters, housing 8,500 analysts, provides “important geospatial intelligence for global events, disasters and military actions worldwide.”
Currently, Rod is leading the design for the renovation and expansion of the Headquarters for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve. This project includes two significant historic buildings. The Eccles Building, the original headquarters, was designed by Paul Cret, and Jules De Sibour designed the other; it originally housed the U.S. Public Health Service. They are directly across from the National Mall on Constitution Avenue in Washington.
On these and all of his projects, Rod is a devoted advocate of design excellence, creating architecture that fosters civic pride, inspires users, and responds to the complex challenges and threats inherent in today’s public buildings.
