Erik is an architect and a northeast regional design resilience leader. He is the leader of the firmwide Gensler mass timber group, the 'Gensler Mass Timber Collaborative'. Erik leads firmwide research efforts on carbon accounting through the Gensler Research Institute. Erik has experience with a variety of project types, including residential, higher education, biotechnology, and mixed-use office.
Erik’s educational background focused on sustainability and the built environment. He majored in Environmental Studies at Bates College and attended University of Oregon for his Masters in Architecture with a Certificate in Technical Teaching. Erik worked in the trades as a carpenter building high performance residential projects for several years before attending graduate school.
Teaching is an important part of Erik’s professional practice. Erik is an adjunct professor at Wentworth Institute of Technology, where he teaches core curriculum on sustainability and building technology. He has also taught multiple week-long rural design-build intensives with college students from around the country.
Erik’s design philosophy is to create transformative space rooted in sustainability and resilience. He is committed to design that weaves sustainability into the project narrative to drive lasting change. Erik parallels his passion for design in architecture with creative watercolor and music. He is an award-winning architect and watercolor artist.
