STUDIO MA

Christiana Moss, FAIA, forges true architecture for everyone by bringing exceptional design to housing, university campuses and cultural buildings. Often constructed with modest budgets, Christiana’s formative projects reveal her expert handling of proportion, articulation, and light while acknowledging site and social contexts. By uniting innovative processes, regenerative bioclimatic sustainability, and equity with outstanding place-based design, Christiana ushers in new standards for practice that inspire colleagues and clients to use the power of design to effect the meaningful changes we must have for our society to flourish. Her approach has been formed through her studies both at Cornell and the Oslo School of Architecture, where she studied with Sverre Fehn. In Norway, the work of Norberg-Shultz and the concept of genus-loci, or placed-based architecture, established what would become the basis of the collaborative practice at Studio Ma, which Christiana co-founded in 2003. The Japanese word ma — focusing on the space between—sums up her philosophy; whether finding opportunities for architecture in the everyday, engaging underrepresented voices, or advancing regenerative bioclimatic design to reverse the effects of climate change, her approach makes architecture more inclusive, responsive, and resonant with its context.
