Thursday Evening Beer Tasting Tour

San Diego's craft brewing scene demonstrates how adaptive reuse can transform communities. Join us for this tour to see three facilities that occupy historic and industrial structures: Mission Brewery in the former Wonder Bread factory, Stone Brewing at Liberty Station's repurposed Navy Base Mess Hall, and Ballast Point's Little Italy warehouse.

Each stop will highlight creative reuse, integration of sustainable systems, and design's role in cultural storytelling. Led by AEC experts from Lagarsoft SRL and Layer, with insights from a sustainability and emissions consultant at Montrose Environmental, the tour will review practical strategies for reimagining buildings while strengthening community identity.

Learning Objectives

  1. See how adaptive-reuse strategies can extend the life of existing buildings while reducing embodied carbon.
  2. Evaluate sustainability practices used in brewing facilities, including strategies for energy conservation and water stewardship.
  3. Consider how design storytelling and cultural context can enhance community engagement in repurposed spaces.
  4. Discover lessons from San Diego breweries that integrate adaptive reuse, sustainability, and placemaking and that you can apply to future projects.
