Irving Gill: Early Modernism in La Jolla

Join us as we explore the revolutionary legacy of architect Irving Gill, a pioneering figure whose work helped shape the foundations of modern architecture. Gill embraced innovative construction techniques—including tilt‑slab concrete walls and magnesite flooring—to create buildings that were fireproof, durable, and hygienic, reflecting his commitment to functional, forward‑thinking design.

His residential and civic structures introduced a new architectural language defined by unadorned surfaces, flat roofs, and a seamless relationship between indoors and outdoors. Guided by his belief that architectural beauty derives from essential forms—the straight line, the arch, the cube, and the circle—Gill developed a timeless modern aesthetic integrated with nature and climate.

This tour highlights several of Gill’s most significant works in La Jolla, offering insight into the principles and innovations that continue to influence contemporary design.
