Crafting Structure & Space for Small Lots, Dwellings & Budgets

This session will feature three small businesses—a two-person architectural practice, a two-person builder, and a two-person structural engineer—who work together to realize award-winning and high-performance design on urban infill sites.

Join us for insights into these professionals' structural, material, and environmental strategies through two residential case studies that speak to the nature of intelligent "wrangling" in their collaborations. Together and independently, the presenters' body of work includes Tennessee's first AIA COTE Top Ten Green Project, first AIA National Housing Award, first AIA Small Project Award, and numerous regional, state, and local AIA design awards.

Learning Objectives

  1. Delve into the structural design influence on architectural form and space in new and existing small structures.
  2. Discover how a small builder contributes during design phases by planning thoughtfully, advising on techniques of craft, and investigating material sourcing and constructability.
  3. Find out how to explore and implement strategies for handling materials from nature through reuse via two case studies that exemplify team-derived methods for process, repair, install, and maintenance.
  4. Learn how to advocate for unconventional designs that increase density in existing urban sites and neighborhoods while supporting gracious, social, and sustainable communities that benefit from low-energy modes of transit.
