Designing for Climate Risk: A Hands-On Charrette

Architects have an ethical responsibility to address climate risks, but many lack the practical experience to do so. This interactive design charrette will showcase how to collect and evaluate climate projection data, conduct climate risk assessments, and integrate findings into design decisions.

Join us to practice scenario planning and learn how to assess mitigation and adaptation strategies. Aligning climate strategies with client risk tolerance, project goals, and constraints will all be emphasized. You'll leave with actionable skills to prioritize climate adaptation and mitigation, facilitate informed discussions with clients, and use data to guide resilient, future-focused design processes.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discover how to interpret climate projection data from reputable sources to identify potential risks to a design project.
  2. Find out how to perform a climate risk assessment in a collaborative design setting, integrating client priorities and project constraints.
  3. Execute a scenario-planning exercise to evaluate the trade-offs between climate risk mitigation and/or adaptation strategies and other project goals.
  4. Explore how to apply client risk tolerance to prioritization frameworks, embedding climate risk into project goals, design criteria, and decision-making.
