As jurisdictions advance embodied carbon codes, architects and design professionals are being called on not just to comply but also to shape these policies.
This session will build on lessons from California's CALGreen amendments, Buy Clean initiatives, and local reach codes along with perspectives from national certifications like LEED v5. Join us to review case studies on policy adoption, implementation, and design implications, including state baselines, local low-carbon concrete ordinances, and WBLCA applications in practice. You and other attendees will also engage in group exercises, role-playing as regulators to design embodied carbon policies and examine compliance options and enforcement.
Learning Objectives
- Explore the evolving role of codes and policies in driving embodied carbon reductions across states and municipalities.
- Learn how baseline studies, Environmental Product Declarations, and WBLCA tools are being applied in practice to meet compliance requirements.
- Participate in group exercises to explore practitioner challenges and design regulatory frameworks for sample jurisdictions.
- Discuss opportunities for architects and design professionals to engage in policy advocacy and implementation strategies that align with climate action goals.
