The nonprofit Land's Sake Farm donates 30% of its produce to hunger relief, provides Community Supported Agriculture and retail produce, and hosts 7,000 schoolchildren for visits annually. Working pro bono over a seven-year period, PAYETTE developed a master plan for the 40-acre farm and subsequently designed an award-winning animal barn and farmstand. Preserving the "infinite vista" through the historic site, the buildings explore the craft and materiality of "first settlers" building techniques with a nod toward modernity. As you'll see, this net-zero project demonstrates how buildings can be functional, beautiful, and environmentally conscious, all while blending traditional and cutting-edge techniques.
Learning Objectives
- Walk the beautiful 40-acre site to experience how the masterplan carefully integrates the farms functional needs to modernize their farming operation to increase yields and reduce produce loss while preserving the agrarian nature of the site and enhancing people’s connection to the land.
- Learn about traditional timber framing techniques and the challenges of using locally sourced timber in the animal barn.
- Learn about the unique carbon positive building envelope of the new farm stand. An all wood building envelope that marries traditional timber framing with CLT cladding, wood fiber insulation and pine siding as well as recycled glass foam aggregate for below grade insulation.
- Learn how this net-zero farm addresses the short- and long-term effects of climate change with the following strategies: Reduce embodied carbon using timber and natural materials / Eliminate fossil fuels and reduce energy use with passive house strategies / Offset the Farm's energy usage with a roof mounted solar array
