The King Open Community Complex, started in 2014, was the first school to prove that a large public school could be net zero in Massachusetts' cold, humid climate. In 2018, Boardwalk Campus took the proof of concept established by King Open and made net-zero schools achievable throughout Massachusetts. Boardwalk Campus, a net-zero-energy and net-zero water school, was built for the same cost as other non-net-zero elementary schools.
This tour will visit both schools and demonstrate how a holistic approach to sustainability, resilience, and wellness was achieved in each.
