Clarendon Hill: Building Community, One Modular Block at a Time

This session will showcase the Clarendon Hill community in West Somerville. Join us for a presentation and tour led by representatives from the general contractor (Dellbrook), developer (POAH), manufacturer (Lab9), architect (ICON Architecture), and landscape architect (Copley Wolff) behind this major redevelopment project. 

You'll learn about the extensive community process at the heart of this project and delve into lessons learned from a new modular steel-and-concrete construction method. Plus, tour the newly completed first phase of the redevelopment (a nine-story modular high-rise building) and get a sneak peek at the second phase. 
 

Learning Objectives

1. Explore the complexities of running a successful community process in a highly diverse, multilingual, mixed-income housing community and the innovative tools employed to achieve a consensus master plan.
2. Learn about reknitting the historically broken urban fabric into the larger community, using the site's natural grade to minimize the impact of large-scale architecture and introducing public open space.
3. Discuss the challenges and benefits of the first-of-its-kind steel high-rise modular system conformed to meet U.S. and Massachusetts building codes.
4. Examine typical scopes of work provided by an off-site manufacturer and on site by local labor along with the modular construction process.
