Join the AIA Committee on Design and Harvard University for a walking tour featuring four projects that have transformed and reinvigorated notable buildings on Harvard's main campus. For each project, you'll hear from members of the design team and of Harvard University Planning and Design.
Tour stops will include the Smith Campus Center (1966 original, 2018 expansion), the Harvard Art Museums (1927 original, 2014 expansion), Swartz Hall at the Harvard Divinity School (1911 original, 2021 expansion), and Gund Hall at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (1972 original, 2024 transformation).
Learning Objectives
- Explore strategies for transformative reuse and conservation, reinvigorating existing spaces for modern needs.
- Analyze how the renovations and additions interact with, modify, respond to, challenge, and coexist with the original buildings.
- Discuss sustainable practices used in the renovations, such as energy-efficient systems, environmentally friendly materials, and low-total-carbon design.
- Deepen your appreciation of how existing buildings have been repurposed to further Harvard's mission and vision—taking lessons that can be applied to campuses across the country and the world.
