American communities are experiencing a civic stress test in the face of enormous pressure to grow sustainably and build more equitable and climate-friendly places. The future of the built environment has become a highly controversial topic in recent decades, particularly around local land use policy and development review and decision-making.

This discussion will feature notable urban leaders from communities that are at the epicenter of generational changes and facing conflict over major planning and development decisions. The session will highlight comparative experiences with community change and development conflict and preview the launch of the Communities by Design Report on the D.C. region's experience.
