Join a focused exploration of the Columbia Heights and Shaw|Cardozo neighborhoods of Washington, D.C. You'll witness firsthand how these communities, a short Metro train ride north of the city's monumental core and convention center, illustrate neighborhood revitalization in action.

The tour will reveal laboratories for responsible, mixed-use, mixed-income, transit-oriented development in partnership between multiple public agencies and the private sector.

In addition, you'll gain a new appreciation for how these exemplary projects have catalyzed real estate transformation in the neighborhoods and along the 14th Street and U Street corridors.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explore how architects, urban designers, and planners can work in conjunction with public-private partnerships to generate practice and contribute to community well-being.
  2. Compare the development patterns of the different neighborhoods visited, and discuss the mix of uses and the integration of adaptive reuse projects.
